Business cards can be more than utilitarian, more than a surface to print your name, title, and contact information. They can be an opportunity to create an emotional expression of your brand—a tactile gesture for someone to take with them, something they will remember, and want to share.
The business cards below use unconventional materials and printing methods to convey a unique message. While these approaches are often more expensive than traditional offset or digital printing, each client has felt the reaction the cards receive justifies the investment.
Letterpress Business Cards for Alteriors
These business cards for Alteriors are a reflection of the modern furniture products sold in their store. The thick card was achieved through duplexing two letterpress printed cards. The surprise with these business cards is when you realize the edges are painted to mirror the Alteriors logo.
Laser Cut Business Cards for Habitude Design
These business cards for Habitude have laser cut holes through the duplexed card. The 1/16″ holes required precise registration as the alignment with the ‘a’ in the logo was critical. While the holes form part of the logo on the front, they represent map locations on the back.
Metal Business Cards for Exotic Wood
These business cards for Exotic Wood are not cheap, but the feedback has been fantastic. Metal was used in part to encourage the question “Why metal cards for a company named Exotic Wood?” The answer is because the designer has grown to use other materials such as glass and metal since starting and naming the company. The metal business cards are etched and carved using cosmetic grade, 300 microns, rolled stainless steel.
Wooden Business Cards for Exotic Wood
These business cards for Exotic Wood were created as a more cost effective (and more frequently handed out) alternative to the metal ones seen above. The wooden cards are run through a modified inkjet printer using only black ink for a minimalistic result.
Letterpress Business Cards for N45 Architecture Inc.
These business cards for N45 Architecture Inc. were first offset printed to achieve the solid green ink coverage (letterpress printing does not lend itself to heavy solid colours very well), letterpress printed in the black and grey, and then duplexed together. Finally, the edges of the cards are painted green to match the back.
Business Cards are an Often Missed Opportunity
Budgets and the lure of saving money are always a consideration when designing and printing business cards, but so should the potential impact generated by making a larger investment.
Giving someone a business card is frequently the first, and often one of only a handful of opportunities to provide a tactile demonstration of how your brand is different. It is a chance to show that details matter to you and that your company is not like anyone else.
